I was no aware of how many different types of desk chairs there were out there. I needed a leather office chair for my office so I decided to search online. I thought it would be an easy task picking out a chair, but to my surprise there were so many chairs to choose from I didn’t know what to do.
I decided that I needed to narrow down my choices. The first thing I did was decide on the color. I knew that I wanted a black chair that was made of leather. I also wanted it to be a swivel chair so I could easily see everything around me in my office. With these two options in mind I was able to narrow down my choices to a few different chairs.

A Briefer History of CoSHH Management and Risk Assessment

CoSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health which is a regulation that applies to every business in the United Kingdom. Some businesses believe that if they have less than five employees? they do not have to abide by the CoSHH regulations, however this is not the case.
Your company will inevitably be using some products that contain substances. These products can be thinners, air fresheners, washing up liquid, lubricants and much much more. If you do use these then you need to adhere to the CoSHH regulations. The reason for this is because you may subject not only your employee but the public to any one of these substances and therefore there MUST be prevention of damage to health put in place.
As a basic example, imagine a decorator who is painting a home working as a sub contractor for a larger enterprise. The decorator mixes white spirits with the paint he is using to help thin the paint before application. This process is something a decorator carries out as an everyday task.
Here are the possible risks to health from this process:
1. Dermatitis caused by the decorator not wearing suitable hand protection (gloves) from white spirits. The Safety Data Sheet for paint may say that it is non-hazardous; however the manufacturer and provider of the SDS did not take into account the use of the thinners and has no legal obligation to do so.
2. The decorator may leave white spirits or paint lying about the home of the customer and this may come into the hands of a child.
3. White spirits is highly flammable and the white spirits or paint solution may become exposed to a naked flame and cause a fire. Does the decorator smoke?
This is why we must risk assessment and in this specific case produce a CoSHH assessment. CoSHH risk assessment is unique and must be treated separately from all other forms of risk assessment that a business would do under the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act. This is why chemical risk assessment has its own regulation so that it can be treated as a different animal.
There is no requirement to be qualified to produce a CoSHH assessment. In fact there is no legal quality standard that a CoSHH assessment must follow. The reason for this is because if you have a CoSHH assessment and an accident occurs then is has failed and it wasn’t good enough. Thereafter there will be repercussions the extent of which will be decided on the reasonable controls that where put in place to prevent the incident occurring.
So the premise is that if you produce a CoSHH assessment, you must produce the best CoSHH assessment you can. If you do not you may receive heavy fines both to the company and personally with the potential of imprisonment for severe breaches of the regulation for Directors’ or the offending party.
Remember ignorance will not be tolerated by the Health and Safety Executive! When carrying out compliant CoSHH assessment on behalf of your business you must understand the task that is being performed by the worker and the substance that is being used in the task. You must take into account the environment that the task is carried out in and the reaction of the substance in that environment. I recommend that you at least take a basic risk assessment course so that you can become familiar with assessment. This will help you so understand not only the risk posed but also that control mechanisms that can be put in place as prevention.
If you have many chemicals and many processes that are being carried out DO NOT be tempted to download template assessments from assessment vendors. This is not only frowned upon by the Health and Safety Executive but is a significant risk to the operator who may be carrying out a task differently. The person who produced the assessment you downloaded may not know that the decorator was using white spirits as a thinner or possibly any of the other substances the use during their working day or even at home. This is why the risk assessor must have seen the process, must have spoken with the operator so that all risks can be assessed as they are and not as they are assumed to be.
DO NOT let a simple solution land you with heavy fines, damage the health of your workers or land you behind bars. Either produce your own assessments of bring a health and safety consultant onto your site to carry out the CoSHH assessments.
It is advisable that you find a CoSHH management solution to help control your CoSHH assessments and to remind to you to periodically review each of your assessments. If something in the process changes then a CoSHH assessment needs to be reviewed. If a Safety Data Sheet is updated by a manufacturer then you MUST have the latest copy and you MUST review your CoSHH assessment.
There are service providers out there that will help manage all this for and the requirement to use one of these providers is down to your in house ability to manage CoSHH compliance. CoSHH is a specialist subject to it is advisable that if you don’t know, then ask!
If you have read this article and you do not have CoSHH assessments in place and they have not been provided to your workers, then take it from me that you are doing something very wrong. If you think that your business does not use hazardous substances then think again, even in an office products are used that contain chemicals and you would be surprised what your workers can get up to with them!
The Health and Safety Executive are seldom surprised because they’ve seen it and heard it all before. Did you know that flour dust and poor ventilation led to a school chef developing severe asthma? No? Well you probably wouldn’t have thought of that unless you’d carried out an assessment and this claim would have cost you £200,000 in compensation.
So, please think again, do you really use hazardous substances?

What is So Good About Amtico Flooring

Choosing Amtico flooring means you don’t’ have to worry about long tem maintenance- your floor will never need sanding or re-finishing. The tough abrasion resistant surface will repel stains and moisture making it an ideal choice for wet areas such as bathrooms and shower rooms, and heavy wear areas such as hallways and entrance lobbies.
Amtico wood authentically replicates the natural product and it’s true characteristics. The Stripwood is highly variable in grain, shade and decoration. Please consider this in your product selection, as our online images only display a small section of the material.
Installing Amtico wood flooring can be undertaken by any reasonably competent DIYer with little in the way of equipment. If you are installing onto an existing wood floorboard, chipboard, or MDF sub-floor, it is always good practice to install a new plywood base first. Not only will this ensure long term wear, it will prevent undulations showing through your new flooring. If your sub-floor is reasonably flat, 6mm exterior grade moisture resistant plywood is adequate. This should be fixed at 15-20cm centers with screw nails.
If your sub-floor is old and extremely uneven, a heavier grade plywood 9mm or 12mm should be used. However before installing this, level off any hollows with a latex screed compound. Otherwise the plywood will never be completely flat.
After installing the plywood, spend as much time as possible filling any gaps in the joints, and knocking down nails flat. Then take down any high spots with a medium grade sand paper. Time taken on preparing the sub-floor will produce huge dividends when you have installed you new Amtico, so do not be tempted to cut any corners.
Depending on how flat and smooth you have managed to make the plywood base, it may be necessary to apply a further leveler such as Ardex Feather Finish which can be applied thinly without the risk of delaminating.
If you are installing over a solid floor e.g. concrete, asphalt, quarry tiles, stone flags etc. it is imperative that your do a thorough check of the moisture content of the sub-floor. Even a slight amount of moisture in a sub-floor will cause Amtico flooring to start lifting within a very short period of time. Your investment will then be wasted, as the floor will be beyond repair. Check first for the presence of a dpm, which should be visible on your outside, walls maybe the first or second line of brick or stone. If there is nothing evident, and your house was build before 1960, then it is safe to assume that there is no damp proof membrane in the sub-floor.
Your only option then is to apply a surface dpm to the sub-floor. These are a 2-part epoxy resin coating. These are easy to apply, but can take up to 48 hours to cure. The most widely used product is ES3000 made by Treetabond.
Once you have a dry clean solid sub-floor, a leveling screed should be laid. Always follow the screed manufacturers instructions with regard to the use of priming or bonding agents. Remember that if the screed de-bonds from the sub-floor, your new Amtico floor will also fail. The screed should be rubbed down as smooth as possible before installing your Amtico flooring. Any trowel marks, high or low spots will soon become evident once you have a new shiny floor over the screed. Therefore more time and effort spent on the preparations will be rewarded with a superior final floor finish.
The Amtico flooring in Stripwood should always be installed using the approved Amtico adhesives For wet areas the Amtico ‘Universal’ adhesive should always be used. Amtico flooring can be laid onto underfloor heating, provided that Amtico HT (high temperature) adhesive is used. For all other areas the standard Amtico SF (solvent free) adhesive can be used without problems.
As with all flooring, Amtico flooring will benefit from regular maintenance. The Amtico floor dressing will give enhanced protection from moisture and abrasion. The Amtico Cleaner will effectively clean your floor without stripping off the Dressing. However, when the time comes to renew the dressing, Amtico Dressing Remover is a powerful and aggressive stripper, which makes light work of removing heavy build-ups of old layers of floor dressing. Used Ford Ka – Part of the Family?
Remember that recent advert from a French car manufacturer that basically showed that buying their people carrier was to buy a new family pet? The car tore around the gravel driveway, opening and closing its windows to the sound of a dog whining and flapping its rear windscreen wiper ferociously as if it was a tail. I uttered one word the first time I saw it: “stupid”. Yet the marketing bods knew what they were on about as I had a similar experience when a used Ford Ka entered my family’s lives.
Isn’t it always the way that when your expectations are at their lowest that the reality is always a nice surprise? For example, going to see the Matrix under duress turned out to be not only a great film but a favourite film of all time, watching Lincoln City against Hull in the bottom tier of English football on a wet and cold Saturday afternoon turned into a wonderful win for the Lincoln underdogs and having the wrong guitar delivered turned from disappointment to my most prized possession.
The little used Ford Ka was met with similar scepticism at first. At the time it was bought it was two years old, but the design was a whopping decade old and in car years that’s enough to qualify for a pension. Yes it still had the curvy features that made it a hit in the first place but it cost just £3995 and for that money you can’t expect anything decent surely. Regardless of this off we trotted to the dealership much to my dismay for a test drive. Behind the wheel things instantly got better, with white dials and chunky steering wheel giving a sporty impression, green neon lights illuminating everything in a clubbers guide to Ibiza style and all the switches on the dashboard fell easily to hand.
All Ka’s came with a 1.3 litre petrol engine as standard and in a car this light it proved surprisingly speedy, particularly when driving in and out of tight spaces in the city. The gear-change was light and responsive and the handling was sublime. The handling was so good in fact that after we’d bought the car, I’d often find myself leaving the coupe at home and going for a mad dash around town in the Ka.
Ok, before I go too overboard, yes this was a two-year old car that cost a mere £3995 so the interior plastics for example were very cheap. The insides of the door panels were bare metal in places rather than plush cloth and although the gear stick was well positioned and easy to use, it stuck out of the floor with no hint of an aesthetically pleasing surround. The boot was tiny, the road noise howling at motorway speeds and the engine was a little harsh when pushed. But to criticise the Ford on these points is to say Cindy Crawford is ugly because of her mole. It’s a tiny imperfection on an otherwise great package.
So why am I reminiscing about the Ka? Well after a couple of years of fun-filled and repair free driving it was traded in for a younger model from a rival. Yet by this time the little used Ford had become more than just a car, it was part of the family. I’d argue it was ahead of the dog in the pecking order, although the parents just about kept their noses in front. Needless to say the replacement is no-where near as good and my coupe is happy to have me back.
So this week I found myself glued to the television again when this time an advert came on that seemed very cool. Lo and behold it was for the all new 2009 Ford Ka. In a society obsessed with having the latest gadgets – PlayStation 3, iPhone I’m looking at you – it seems sensible to assume that those who have kept hold of their used Ford Ka’s may very well consider trading in for a younger model. Knowing first hand the range of emotions I went through saying goodbye to the little one, there’s going to be a lot of upset people this year, and not just because of the credit crunch.
The burning question will of course be “Is the new model any good?” It certainly looks far more grown up, whilst maintaining the sense of fun from its predecessor, so only time will tell. Problem is, expectations have been raised sky high, leaving the new Ka with a mountain to climb. On the plus side, expect to see a dramatic rise in the number of used Ford Ka’s in the marketplace at credit crunch busting prices.
